Wedding: Nicole & Mark

July 21st, 2010

The first wedding of my season was a totally sweet couple, Nicole & Mark. I was actually second-shooting for Paula Scherr of Sweet P/Paula Scherr Photography (and my rad kid-sister – talent runs in the family, hey?). Nicole & Mark chose a completely charming backyard ceremony location with all sorts  of rustic details and flowers galore! We luckily had lovely weather, too – never a guarantee in Edmonton, AB, that’s for sure!

Congratulations, you two! Hope you had a lovely honeymoon!

Cheers,
Karla

Things just keep evolving.

July 15th, 2010

Hello good friends,

I have some exciting/sad news, I think. The exciting part is that my husband got a promotion (yay!) and a raise (double yay!) after a lot of hard work. Congratulations, babe! I’m so proud of you! It is also exciting because of course it’s bringing on a huge change to our lives, and I just can’t not be excited! His new job is taking us back to Toronto – we’re moving back out east before the end of the summer! The sad news is, of course, that we’ll be leaving all the good friends we’ve made here, and my family who live in and around Edmonton will be a lot further away than a few hours’ drive.

For those of you who don’t know me very well yet, I was born and raised in Alberta, but after finishing university, I went off to teach English in Japan for a year and then decided to move in with my big sister in the big city of Toronto where I stayed for 5 years. In fact, Jon and I met there and after distance-dating (he was living in London, ON) for 2 years, we decided to move to Calgary. So while we will always have a soft-spot for Calgary in our hearts – since it’s the beautiful city we got married in, and bought our first home in, and adopted our adorable puppy from, and learned how to stay off our butts while snowboarding in the nearby mountains – we also have a love affair with Toronto, since it is the city where we met and fell in love.

What I’m most excited about, though, is that I’m going to launch myself into my photography out there. I’m going to use all the things I’ve learned in the last year, the things that have re-inspired me and put me more firmly on this path that I’m more sure I should be on every day, and I will one day be a successful photographer. How could that not be exciting?! I realize I have a long way to go and that it’s a risk, but I think I’m finally ready to take it.

Peace everyone,

Love Karla

Aaand…I’m back!

June 22nd, 2010

So much has been up in the air over the last month, I feel like I’m just coming down! We’ve had family visiting from Ontario, I ran a half-marathon and then I – ME! – went camping for the long weekend, which for me is an entire week of anxiety leading up to it. There’s no pics of that, sorry.

Plus the company I work for as my day-job (a small energy company where I do admin and which helps finance this wonderful, expensive hobby I have) went up for sale and after about a month of presentations and speculation, we decided not to sell after all. Which was good, because it means I still have a day-job and they agreed to give us Fridays off for the summer!

So that means I can dedicate one whole weekday to my photography, instead of having to cram it in to evenings and weekends like I’ve been doing. Much better!

I’ve also been to a couple of workshops over the past few weeks. The first one was the No BS Photography Roadshow, which was an evening of great images, inspiration and not a little hilarity. They had a lot of great ideas for marketing and promoting my work and studio, which I’d like to implement in the coming months.

Then I attended the FastTrack seminar by Dane Sanders, a truly inspirational and genuinely nice guy. Not to mention immensely talented both at photography and getting through to a room full of strangers and making us all a family. One of his points that has really stuck with me in the 3+ weeks since the seminar, is ‘to always be an invitation.’ What I think he means by that is to always be open to people everywhere in order to make connections, meet new potential clients and just be all-around less closed off, which I think I’ve had a habit of doing in the past.

Dane’s seminar has made an impact on my business already – I met so many great photographers there who I’ve connected with on Facebook so I see their daily updates of what they’re doing and they urge me on to keep moving forward, as well. In fact, Stephanie Lablonde posted a ‘help needed’ update for a volunteer photographer to help out at the Candlelight Gala for the Missing Children Society of Canada. What an incredible experience, to help out with such a worthy cause. From my perspective, it was a great success and all the credit goes to the members of the Society for all their hard work and dedication and of course to all the generous attendees who donated time, money and product to make it such a great night. It was also at a venue that is close to my heart – The Fairmont Palliser, where Jon & I got married nearly 5 years ago! It’s such a beautiful hotel, for such a beautiful event. I hope my photos do them both justice!

Anyway, hope you’re enjoying the summer so far, as well! I’ve got the first of my weddings coming up in the next few weeks, so things will soon be in full swing! Also, since I was such a blabbermouth in this post, I promise to post more photos in the future!

Take care,

Karla

Look at me, all fancy!

Welcome to the latest edition of my blog!

This format is far better for displaying photos, so I plan to be posting a lot of new ones! And I’ll really do my best to put up posts more frequently. Unfortunately, I lost the comments from my previous blog in the switcheroo, which is a total drag and I’m still working on seeing what I can do about it, but in the meantime, if you want to do a side-by-side comparison, my old blog is still here.

Isn’t this so much better? I really can’t stop looking at it, I’m so happy.

So my latest photography obsession is not with any new gear, it’s actually a camera application on my iPhone. Pardon me while I dork-out a bit here over my phone, but I have to say that I loooooove my iPhone. It is my favourite, indulgent possession. And this camera app? It’s called Hipstamatic. A huge thank you to Dooce for bringing it to my attention when I saw these pictures on her blog! It might be because I think I had a camera similar to this when I was a kid, or that my first foray into photography classes was with black and white film, but I love LOVE the old-school feel of these photos. I might be a little late to the party finding this app, but I’m half-considering using it in some of my wedding photography this summer. Look at how cool these are – even boring stuff looks all arty and interesting:

Besides the fact that my iPhone was attached to my hip (which I know everyone noticed and was probably annoyed by, but how cool is my iPhone? I KNOW!), our trip to London (ON, not UK) was so much fun. It has been quite a while since I was last there to visit our friends and family, so there was much visiting and nom nom nomming a new nephew, and the older nephews of course, and, alas, there was also a house party at which I could not control my wine consumption and ended up with a massive hangover, a compromised immune system and a nasty cold. Which I’m still whining about, by the way. I’m also going to brag about how awesome the weather was ‘cuz we were in shorts and flip flops most of the time and then I got back to Calgary and it SNOWED. Of course. I had to wear mittens this morning. HMPH.

And to tease you all a little, I attended the No BS Photography Seminar this past week and got tons – TONS – of great ideas and inspiration! So I’ll have more of what I learned, what inspired me and what I’m doing about it all in the coming weeks.

Vive la révolution!

Guilt

March 18th, 2010

All you brides out there, try not to be a bride like I was. I’ve been married for over 4 years now and have yet to give my fabulous bridesmaids any vanity shots of how gorgeous they looked that day. Can you believe that? I’ve felt guilty about it forever. I also have yet to create a wedding album of our own to show off our pictures, but researching album companies and professional printers along with dreaming up album designs for sample albums has inspired me to get my butt in gear.

So naturally, the first album I’ve designed is from our wedding. Enter KISS Wedding Books!  I ordered some ‘little Kisses’ in ‘Redlight Red’ a few weeks ago. They update you at every stage of the printing and binding process, which frankly just fuels the anticipation! They arrived on Tuesday this week and they are. So. Friggin’. Cute!

They even come with that little patterned pouch to tuck them into, which is just gorgeous. I was so very impressed! I got 3 of them – one for each of my bridesmaids and one to keep for myself. I think they’d make perfect gifts for your wedding party – they’re so small, yet so elegant and a great keepsake! (However, I’ve also ordered some prints for my ‘maids in case they want to hang their gorgeous selves on their own walls.)

As for the inside, here are some of the spreads I designed myself. I’m so happy with the way they turned out and anxious to see what my bridesmaids think! (I have a feeling that when I give the one to my sister, my mom is going to want my spare!!) Photos by Sharla Mawhinney of Eye of the Beholder.

What do you think? Will it be enough to alleviate my guilt of being such a dead-beat bride?

Jon and I are headed out to London (ON, not UK) for Easter with his family and I’m hoping spring will be in full bloom out there so I can get some great shots. It will be several weeks yet before Calgary is any colour but brown, I fear!

Hope the Easter Bunny is good to all of you and that you get nothing but Bernard Callebaut chocolates! (That’s totally what I’m hoping the Easter Bunny brings ME!)

Cheers,
Karla

Brrr!

January 27th, 2010

In latest Lilypad News, I’m hard at work on some sample albums for clients to browse. They look gorgeous, and I’m hoping to put up a gallery of sample pages on the website once I’ve got my favourites picked out. I’ve got a few dates booked this summer for weddings already, so if you need a photographer, please don’t hesitate! I’m also working on new pricing & packaging, which will streamline the whole process for couples to get exactly what they want and more from Lilypad Photo Arts. Exciting!

One thing about us Canadians, we sure can complain about the weather! I’m pretty lucky to live in Calgary where we do get the warm chinook winds from time to time – almost all our snow was gone because of a lovely chinook last week! But today, it’s chilly and snowy and just not so much fun. The good news is that I get to wear my new winter boots a lot, though. And sometimes we get a little fog that makes the ice crystals stick to the trees and they just look so pretty!

For New Year’s, Jon, Tucker & I trekked out to Radium, BC, to hang out with a bunch of friends and pig out on raclette & fondue. There were a lot of activities early on in the evening for kids to enjoy the New Year, too, which included tobogganing on a little slope nearby, which Jon felt his duty to make sure was safe for the little kidlets. Which was so nice of him, don’t you think? I think he had some fun, too, though.

2010 is looking good! In the spirit of the Olympics starting in just a few weeks practically next door, I’ve signed up for another half-marathon this year in May. I know, what was I thinking??? Didn’t I vow I’d never run that far at one time again? Yes, well, I figured the flat course I ran last year wasn’t enough of a challenge – this year, the race is in Canmore, Alberta, which is in the MOUNTAINS. Seriously, I must be cracked. Enjoy the picture of me nearly passing out as I crossed the finish line last year. GOD.

Yours in health, happiness & success in 2010,

Karla

‘Tis the season!

Hello!

Announcing Gift Certificates at Lilypad Photo Arts! I just received them, so if you are still in need of a gift idea, why not some family or individual portrait time? The gift certificates can be made out to any denomination, and will be deducted from the final amount of time and product purchased, so the possibilities are endless!

I did some great family shots this past weekend for my cousin who is visiting from Memphis with her family. It’s rare that my cousins, their families & my aunt & uncle are all in the same place, so they wanted to make sure we captured some family photos. It was a pretty, snowy and chilly time outside, but we managed to get some shots in, and the black and whites turned out to be my faves. The twins couldn’t remember my name very well as it was the first time we’d met, so they kept referring to me as, “Karl, The Photographer” which is STILL cracking me up!

And I finally got the last of my Christmas cards out this week. Jon was not super-impressed with having to wear a hat, but don’t we look CUTE??? Maybe next year I’ll be able to think of something more dignified for him…but probably not.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! Take care, be safe and have fun!

Cheers,
Karla

New gear makes me nerdy…

November 22nd, 2009

So I made my first E-bay purchase a few weeks ago and other than pulling a total newie move by not flat out asking the seller if they could ship to Canada just because their posting said they wouldn’t and having to go through a whole process of shipping to my parents’ place in California and then get it home from there, the experience was pretty good! And now I have a spanky new 100mm/f2.8 Macro lens to boast about! Yay!

And so it was Remembrance Day not long ago. The City of Calgary made a display of crosses representing all the soldiers from this area that gave their lives in all the battles Canada has been involved in, right up to the soldiers who have died this year. It was nothing short of amazing I thought, so I took the time out of my day to go have a look, pay my respects and take photos to share it with everyone. It really moved me – I almost needed rain gear for my camera, there were so many tears.

Peace everyone,

Karla

New site finally up!

October 3rd, 2009

Whew! Working a full-time job really put a dent in the amount of time I had to work on the redesign, but I think it turned out pretty nifty in the end, if I do say so myself! Please check it out:

Lilypad Photo Arts

Also, I wanted to post a little blurb about Christmas cards. Over the past two years, I’ve managed to get it together enough to create a photo Christmas card to send to family and friends which I love to personalize with a photo of my little family on it, along with a seasonal greeting that’s both sincere and fun. I’ve already got some ideas for this year’s card, as well, but I wanted to share with you the ones I’ve made in the past on VistaPrint (front & back images), so if you’re thinking of sending out cards this year, these are totally worth the little extra effort to design and personalize!

And let me know if you need some photos for your Christmas cards!

Take care,

Karla

It’s a little weird, being the model…

October 2nd, 2009

I got my husband, Jon, to take some pictures of me yesterday so I’d have something more recent to add to the ‘About Me’ section of my website. It was a little awkward not being the one behind the camera (I didn’t want to be too bossy!) and smiling made me feel a little cheesy…I think he did a great job, tho:

That’s our 2-year-old Bichon-Poodle, Tucker, with the dirty paws.

Anyway, I’ve just finished editing the final version (hopefully) of my website and just have to upload it to my domain once I get the behind-the-scenes domain hosting stuff done and linked up with my email. If it hasn’t been clear so far, I am excited!

Take care,

Karla
